Description
Ronald Lee Ermey was a former U.S. Marine drill instructor and American actor. He became famous for his portrayal of Gunnery Sergeant Hartman in Stanley Kubrick’s 1987 film Full Metal Jacket, earning a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor. In Full Metal Jacket, “The Gunny” refers to Gunnery Sergeant Hartman, the ruthless and foul-mouthed drill instructor played by R. Lee Ermey. In the film’s first half, Hartman trains a platoon of recruits at Parris Island during the Vietnam War. He is killed by one of his recruits, Private Leonard “Gomer Pyle” Lawrence, after driving the private to a mental breakdown.
